A student laptop tends to fail at the worst possible moment, and it is almost never a coincidence. The machine that has been slowly getting worse all year finally gives up the week something is due. Most of what we see is fixable the same day, and a fair amount of it you can rule out yourself in ten minutes before you go anywhere.
Below are the failures we see most often across our Richmond, Fredericksburg and Charlottesville shops, the checks worth ten minutes of your own time first, realistic turnaround on each repair, and the point where trading the laptop in beats fixing it.

These five checks cost nothing and resolve a real share of the laptops that come through the door when terms start.
- Hold the power button for 30 seconds with the charger unplugged, then plug in and try again. This clears a surprising number of no-boot and no-display situations.
- Test a different charger and a different outlet before you blame the port. A frayed cable presents exactly like port damage.
- Check the battery health yourself. On Windows, open Command Prompt and run powercfg /batteryreport, then open the file it saves and compare full charge capacity against design capacity. On a Mac, hold Option, click the Apple menu, choose System Information and open Power to see cycle count and condition.
- Free up disk space. A drive with almost nothing left will make any laptop feel broken. Clearing 15 to 20 percent of the drive is worth trying before you pay for anything.
- Back up now, while it still turns on. A laptop behaving strangely is often a laptop with a failing drive, and drives rarely give a second warning.
The Six Laptop Failures We See Most
- Battery that no longer holds a charge. Runs fine plugged in, dies within an hour unplugged, or shuts down suddenly at 30 percent.
- Cracked or failing screen. Spiderweb cracks after a summer in a backpack, vertical lines, flickering, or a dim panel that brightens if you press on the lid.
- Damaged charging port. The cable only charges at one angle, the connector feels loose, or the charge light flickers when the cord moves.
- Slow to the point of unusable. Multi-minute boots, constant fan noise, and stalling with a browser and a document open at once. On a laptop over four years old this is usually a failing hard drive or too little RAM, not a virus.
- Keyboard problems. Keys that repeat, stick, or do nothing after a spill. Sugary drinks do far more damage than water and get worse the longer they sit.
- No power at all. No light, or a light with a black screen. This one spans everything from a dead charger to a failed board, which is why it needs diagnostics rather than guesswork.
When Repair Stops Making Sense
The rule we use out loud with customers: if the repair quote is more than about half of what the laptop is worth today, and the machine is past five years old, the money is better spent on a replacement. A battery and an SSD in a 2019 ultrabook is usually a good trade. A new screen and a new board in the same laptop is not.

Back Up Before You Hand It Over
Any repair that involves the drive or the board carries some risk to data, and a laptop that is already misbehaving carries more. Copy the coursework off to an external drive or cloud storage before you come in. If the screen is too broken to use or the laptop will not boot at all, say so when you drop it off. Pulling files off a machine that will not start is a normal part of the job, but it is a separate step and it needs to be agreed before work begins, not discovered afterwards.

School-Issued Laptops and Chromebooks
If the laptop came from a school district and is managed by their IT department, it usually has to go back through the school for repair. District devices are enrolled in management systems that lock down parts and software, and an outside repair can breach the terms families sign at the start of the year. Check with the school first. Personally owned Chromebooks are a different matter and we can look at those.
Before Term Starts, and Before Finals
There are two moments in an academic year when a laptop failure costs you the most, and they are the two moments when every repair shop in Virginia is busiest. The start of term is one. The fortnight before finals is the other. Both are entirely predictable, and both are the wrong time to discover your battery will not hold a charge.
The useful habit is a five-minute check twice a year, at the start of each term. Look at battery health, look at free disk space, and run one real backup. Three minutes of that in September or January is what stops a bad week in December or May.
Do
- Check battery health at the start of each term, not when it fails.
- Keep at least fifteen percent of the drive free. A full drive is the most common cause of "my laptop got slow".
- Run a real backup before every deadline period, and check it restored something.
- Bring it in the week before finals, not during them. That is when the turnaround is quickest.
Don't
- Ignore a fan that has started to sound different. That is the earliest warning you get.
- Keep using a laptop that shuts down under load. It gets worse, and quickly.
- Leave a cracked screen because it still works. The crack spreads and the price does not.
- Wait for the deadline week to find out whether it can be fixed the same day.

How fast can you fix a laptop before term start?
Batteries, charging ports and speed tune-ups are commonly same-day. Screens are same-day when the panel is in stock and two to three days when it has to come in. Student laptop repair gets busier the closer it gets to the first day of classes, so the same repair booked when term starts moves faster than one booked in the first week of the semester.
Do I need an appointment?
My laptop will not turn on at all. Is that a big repair?
Not necessarily. No-power symptoms come from failed chargers and failed drives at least as often as failed boards, and the first two are quick and inexpensive. Diagnostics tell you which one you are dealing with before you commit to anything.
