A laptop that will not turn on is frightening out of proportion to how bad it usually is. The work is on it, or the photos are, and the machine is giving you nothing to go on. The useful thing to know before you do anything else is that most no-power laptops are not dead. They are unpowered, which is a different problem, and a decent share of them come back in the first five minutes of sensible troubleshooting.

Below are the seven things worth trying, in the order we would try them, and then the point at which trying more stops helping.

START HERE · IS ANYTHING HAPPENING AT ALL?

⚠ If there is any chance liquid got into it, stop here and do not press the button again. That one is covered further down and pressing the button makes it worse.

First, Work Out Which Kind of Dead It Is

No power and black screen feel like the same fault when you are standing over it, and they are not. A machine with no power is not receiving or not accepting electricity. A machine with a black screen is very often running perfectly and simply not showing you anything.

The test takes ten seconds in a dark room. Press the power button, wait, and look and listen. A charging light, a keyboard backlight, a fan spinning up, a faint hard drive tick, any of those means the machine is getting power and you are looking at a display fault or a boot fault rather than a power one. Complete silence and complete darkness means start at the beginning.

The Seven Fixes, in the Order We Would Try Them

Work down them in order and stop at the first one that changes anything. All seven are safe to try at the kitchen table with the charger in your hand, and none of them involves opening the case.

On a Mac the battery does not come out, so Apple’s own steps for a Mac that will not turn on take the place of fix three. For fix seven, Dell lists what each pattern means in its guide to laptop beep and power light codes, and HP and Lenovo publish the same on their support sites.

If none of the seven has changed anything, that is genuinely useful information rather than a wasted afternoon. It means the fault is inside, and it narrows what we look at first. You can start a quote online and tell us what you already tried, or read what a computer repair covers.

What the Lights and the Fans Are Telling You

NOTHING AT ALL

Power side

Charger, port, battery or the power circuit on the board
LIGHTS, NO PICTURE

Display or boot

Backlight, panel, or the machine is failing before it draws anything
FANS AT FULL SPEED

Cooling

It is running and it is unhappy. Shut it down rather than leave it

The middle column is the one people write off unnecessarily. A laptop that lights up and shows nothing has usually not lost anything important, and the files on it are fine. It is a repair with a good outcome, and it is a long way from the worst case. If the panel or backlight turns out to be the fault, our guide to laptop screen replacement in Richmond explains what that repair involves.

When to Stop Trying

⚠ STOP HERE, SERIOUSLY

Anything spilled on it, any smell of burning, any sign of swelling under the trackpad or a case that no longer sits flat, or a machine that starts and dies within seconds every time. In all four cases, keep it off and unplugged and bring it in. Repeated attempts to start a machine with liquid or a short in it is how a cleaning job becomes a component job, and a swollen battery is a safety issue rather than a repair one.

Liquid especially. The corrosion carries on long after the machine feels dry, which is why a laptop that took a spill and then worked for two weeks is not a laptop that got away with it. What can and cannot be saved on the board itself is covered in the motherboard and board-level repair guide.

If the Files Are the Real Worry

Say it at drop-off rather than afterwards. It changes the order the work happens in, and on most laptops it is a straightforward job to get the files off before anything else is attempted, because the drive is a separate component from the fault.

It matters most on newer machines where the storage is soldered to the board, because then the files and the fault live in the same place. Either way, tell us first. Data backup and recovery is a service in its own right and it does not have to wait for a decision about the repair.

Laptop No-Power FAQs

Why will my laptop not turn on even when it is plugged in?

Most often the charger has failed, the charge port is not making contact, or the battery has gone flat enough that the machine will not start until there is some charge in it. Try a different socket, leave it charging for half an hour, then do a thirty second power drain with the charger unplugged.
Unplug the charger, remove the battery if yours comes out without tools, and hold the power button for thirty seconds. It clears residual charge that can leave a laptop stuck. It works surprisingly often and it cannot damage anything.
Almost never. On most laptops the drive is a separate part from whatever failed, so the files can be read off it regardless of whether the machine is repaired. Tell us at drop-off that they matter.
Keep it off, keep it unplugged, and bring it in as soon as you can. Do not try to start it to see whether it works, and do not put it in rice. The damage is corrosion rather than water, and it carries on until the board is cleaned.

Usually less serious than it looks. Shine a torch at the screen or plug in an external monitor. If there is a faint picture, or a picture on the external screen, the computer is running and the display is the fault.

Sometimes, but it is a long way down the list. The charger, the port, the battery and the charging circuit all produce the same symptom and all four are more common. A diagnosis is what tells you which.

A no-power diagnosis is usually quick, because the sequence is short and each step rules something out. You get the fault, the options and a price before anything is opened, and you decide from there.
